1995-96 ALL-CCHA VOTING
Voting done by the CCHA's eleven head coaches, who
cannot vote for their own players. First, second
and third place votes are worth ten, five and two
points, respectively. Parenthesis indicates 1994-
95 First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention
All-CCHA.

* Indicates that total points are correct, but
number of second and third place votes may be off.
I hope to see the actual results next week. The
results below are based on the CCHA's release of
first place votes and total points. Simple algebra
produced most of the rest. Guessing is the final
component, hence the *'s.

Apologies for the duplicate H-L and I-H-L info, but I thought it
important to repeat the above to shape the context for my
comments.

FORWARDS
No complaints. My first team had Felsner-Hilton-Morrison,
with Botterill-Brown-Carter as the second line. I wanted to
put Tallaire higher than HM, but I couldn't decide where.
The coaches obviously did. Tallaire is a first class goal
scorer, but IMO it seemed like Felsner was more of a catalyst
for LSSU in the second half when they made their run to the
title. I'm thrilled that Madden received HM. I'm surprised that
Michigan's Bill Muckalt didn't receive a single vote, because
he and Madden are two of the CCHA's most exciting players.
(And, Muckalt led the conference in even strength goals.)
But, I didn't think the coaches would put more than three
Wolverines in the top nine. In hindsight, the one positive of
Muckalt being overlooked is the Madden selection. Had
they split the votes given to Madden, neither would have made
HM. Hearty congratulations to Bowtell for being the first Nanook
on the All-CCHA team. Teammate Greg Milles was deserving
of a few votes even though he didn't receive any. BGSU has
several forwards worthy of looks, the best IMO being Fry who
just missed being HM for a second consecutive season. I'm
happy to see Adams where he is on the list, because I feel that
Adams press clippings have been far more impressive than
his on-ice performance the last two seasons. I'm somewhat
surprised by Morrison's unanimous selection. It leads me to
believe that he may be the favorite for Player of the Year.
Morrison IS THE best player in the CCHA, but with his injuries
I'm not sure that he had the best season among CCHA players.
(Aldridge, Hilton and Magliarditi immediately join the discussion.)
If nothing else, I'm surprised by how far Morrison outdistanced
Hilton in the voting. And, why did Watt get a first place vote?
I'm going to have to look at the stats and see which team Watt
lit up this season. :-)

DEFENSEMEN
Kudos, kudos! As a Michigan fan I'm disappointed because I
wanted to see Halko on the first team and Sloan on the second
team, but I'm also a Roach fan and he's deserving of recognition.
On my personal team, I put Aldrige-Halko as the top pair followed
by a near dead heat among Perrault-Roach-Sloan for second
team honors. Maloney is a solid choice as the sixth defender.
WMU's Steve Duke would have been there if not for a season-
ending injury. My biggest thrill among the voting may be the 14
points for Schock. Go Harold! Schock has been a dependable
blueliner since arriving in Ann Arbor (from East Lansing!). One
minor surprise here is that UND's Garry Gruber didn't get a vote.
For that matter, Notre Dame was the only team without a player
listed above. However, IMO Gruber was the top Irish player and
I put him in the Ackerman-Ferguson company.

GOALTENDERS
Even more kudos. I don't know why Lord snagged a vote, but
otherwise it's perfect. My team has Magliarditi one, Askey two
and Grahame three, with Alban and Turco in a dead heat just a
whisper behind Grahame. The only surprise I have with the
coaches voting is the closeness between Mags and Askey.
I think Magliarditi should have had a wider margin, although I do
agree that they were without question the top two netminders in
the CCHA. (How did Grahame sneak a first place vote?)

NOTES
If my math is correct, five players were named on every ballot:
Keith Aldridge, Anson Carter, Marc Magliarditi, Brendan Morrison
and Kelly Perrault. Interesting (IMO fitting) that only three of them
made the First Team. Here's a Michigan perspective on the
remaining awards:
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Morrison looks to be the man. Aldridge
is the best defenseman and should finish in the top 2-4. Mags
dominated, but a freshman goaltender is not going to win it. I
thought that Hilton and Carter had outside chances until I saw the
All-CCHA voting totals. Of the five I've mentioned, I can see reasons
for NOT giving it to each one of them. But, maybe I can see more
reasons FOR giving to Morrison than any of the others.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Magliarditi. Done deal.
OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR: Tough call. Perrault has
the best shot and is the incumbent. Aldridge is the top scorer and
Roach may be the best defenseman with the puck in the CCHA.
Any of the three is a good choice.
DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR: I'm keeping my fingers
crossed for Halko who won it last year. It would lessen the disappoint
of not making the first team.
DEFENSIVE FORWARD OF THE YEAR: From a Michigan view,
I like Hilton and Madden. Unfortunately, only one player from each
team can be nominated. Hilton is the senior and top returning vote
getter and I'd like to see him get it. MSU's Carter and UIC's Peron
are other candidates. LSSU's Battaglia is a future winner.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Ron Mason, Michigan State, for squeezing
45 points out of the Spartans. HM to OSU's John Markell and WMU's
Bill Wilkinson, but how much coaching does it take to ride a hot
goaltender? Berenson (UM) and Jackson (LSSU) are great bench
bosses, but their teams didn't do anything that wasn't expected of
them.
KICKER OF THE YEAR: Remy Hamilton. Had to get a plug in,
I saw Remy at lunch. :-)

Thanks for reading this far.
