Let me add just one or two things to Jack's line of thought from the perspective of a Connecticut person. Both Fusco's and Lane MacDonald were drafted by the Whalers. While Mark Fusco spent a couple of pretty good years with the organization as an undersized defenseman, the other two never even tried to make it with Hartford. I suspect Cleary had some influence in their outlook. And, of course, they all had that Harvard degree which is one marketable piece of paper in the serious world. To get back to generalities, I suspect that the NHL puts a great deal of emphasis on size. That emphasis is by no means as prevalent (for whatever reason) in college hockey. So, right off the bat, we can throw out all the winners who happen to be smaller than the NHL minimum criteria (perhaps 5-11 and 190, or so, unless the player has some extraordinary qualities -- which Kariya obviously has, for instance). Jack is right, though, this is an interesting topic that we ought to re-visit once again. Perhaps the stats geeks on the list could compile (maybe even from the archives) the latest list of what happened to all the winners? -- Dick Tuthill HOCKEY-L is for discussion of college ice hockey; send information to [log in to unmask], The College Hockey Information List.
