Well, what's a Brown hockey weekend without a tie? The Princeton Tigers knotted the score at 1-1 with 41 seconds left in regulation and then played a scoreless (what else?) five-minute overtime to maintain the tie. This result represents the eighth time this season that Brown and an opponent have endured an overtime period without the tie being broken and thus leaves the Bears with an 0-0-8 record in extra-session games. The eight ties in one season breaks the ECAC record held by Yale and also ties the NCAA record shared by Michigan State and Minnesota. With six games remaining in the regular season, the national Division I mark is far from safe. On the upside, the Bears left Tigertown after the Friday night deadlock and claimed an impressive 4-1 victory over Yale at Ingalls Rink on Saturday evening, thereby picking up three points for the fourth weekend since the beginning of 1996. The Bears' overall record since January 1st now stands at 6-1-5 and places them at 5-5-6 in ECAC play, good for 7th place, three points behind Harvard and four points behind Colgate, this Friday's opponent at Meehan Auditorium. Weekend highlights included the continued stellar goaltending of sophomore Jeff Holowaty who has taken over the statistical leadership in the ECAC (1.09 goals against average; .938 saves percentage) and currently boasts a 3-0-6 mark in conference games since prying the starting job away from senior Mark Parsons. Holowaty really seems to be in a groove now, allowing only two goals on the weekend while making 63 saves. This couldn't be happening at a better time, as Brown will face the leading teams in the conference for the balance of the season. The next two series (Colgate/Cornell & St. Lawrence/Clarkson will be played at Magnificent Meehan with the final weekend on the road vs. Vermont/Dartmouth. A tough challenge, but sixth or maybe even fifth place in the final ECAC standings is still within the Bears' grasp if they can finish strong because travel-partner Harvard will have the same schedule to contend with. So, it looks like Colgate, Harvard and Brown will be vying for the final two seeded berths in the ECAC Championship Tournament. Stay tuned. Bill Corrigan LET'S GO BRUNO!
