>>Kesselring took the shot and was stopped nicely >>by Parsons, although several players on the Brown bench banged their sticks >>against the boards as Kesselring skated towards the net in an apparent >>attempt to distract the shooter. This could have resulted in misconducts >>against the offending players and another chance for Kesselring, but that >>was not the case, and besides, Kesselring didn't show any signs of being >>distracted. > >Of course, Kesselring wasn't distracted. Unlike tennis players, who claim >that the slightest noise disrupts their ability to serve, or return >serve, or whatever, hockey players are used to performing amidst loud >noise. I'm sure Kesselring was totally focused on his task as he skated >towards the net. Hockey players are not distracted by noise. I haven't >talked to any of the Brown players about this, but I'm almost sure that >their reaction was directed at the officials, not at the Merrimack player. >In this sense, maybe the referees could have called misconducts, but >they showed some restraint in not doing so. I doubt, however, that >Kesselring could have been given a second chance. As far as I know the >rules simply state that no one shall interfere with the shooter as he >skates towards the net. In hockey, noise doesn't constitute interference. > Rule 4, Penalties Section 6, Penalty Shot / Optional minor penalty Paragraph g: If any player of the opposing team interferes with or distracts the player taking a penalty shot and thereby causes the shot to fail, a second attempt shall be permitted and the referee shall impose a misconduct penalty on the offending player. Rule 6, Playing Rules Section 1, Abuse of Officials and Other Misconduct Paragraph c: A bench minor penalty shall be assessed against any player, coach or nonplaying person who bangs the board with a stick or other instrument. If a player persists in such action, the individual shall be assessed a misconduct penalty. If a coach or nonplaying person persists in such actions, a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed.
