In a very well played game by both teams, St. Lawrence University scored more goals than Clarkson by a 3-2 last night in Appleton Arena. The first period was an excellent period of hockey by both teams, as SLU went up 1-0. Owen made some fantastic saves that period to keep CU from finding the back of the net. The second period, went much the same, with CU playing with a little less intensity than in the first and SLU again scoring another one, making it 2-0 after two periods of play. In the third, Clarkson came out strong and scored a quick goal less than a minute into the period to cut the deficit to one. Then about 9 minutes later CU scored again to tie up the game at 2 apiece. So far Clarkson dominated the play in the third period. SLU scored with just about 65 ticks of the clock left (a very controversial goal) to make it 3-2 and give the Saints their first victory over their north country rivals in four years. Clarkson still leads the 90's series with a 10-2 overall record vs. SLU and 9-1 in their last ten games. Comments: The controversial goal, IMO should have never been allowed. A SLU player tripped a CU player directly in front of the referee and nothing was called. At the time, SLU was already on a 3-1 breakaway and subsequently scored. The whistle should have been blown and most likely the game would have entered overtime. By the way, the officials last name was Toner. He also did the CU-Colgate game and was horrible in that game also. The other official for the night was Ammian and he was inconsistent, but atleast he was inconsistent for both teams. The linesman was Legault. IMO Toner falls into the category of officials that should NOT ever be allowed to officiate a college hockey game. Blowing a very blatant call with just about a minute to go in the tied hockey game is extremely unexcusable. Sitting next to me at the game were SLU fans that also agreed with my thoughts on Toner, and told me that the third goal should have never been allowed, because the trip was so blatant. So I am not just a person who is trying to make excuses for the loss, just pointing out how one call can control a game and its outcome. ________________ Siren Chudgar Clarkson University '96 SUNY @ Syracuse Medical School '00 LET'S GO TECH!!!!
