Over 3,700 people saw the Clarkson University Golden Knights take on the
University of Vermont Catamounts at the Cheel Arena in Potsdam, NY on
Saturday night. The game lived up and probably exceeded the expectations
of many.

The first period was hard fought and well played by both teams. Clarkson
seemed to have the upper hand in the first period outshooting Vermont
18-6, but unfortunately still trailed 1-0 at the end of one. The Golden
Knights played well, with a great deal of tenacity but just could not
find the back of the net. The lone Vermont goal was a short-handed goal
by St. Louis, with an assist from none other than Perrin.

Again, both teams started out strong in the second, but again UVM struck
first, a power-play goal by Perrin to give Vermont a quick 2-0 lead just
minutes into the second period. Clarkson responded with a power-play
goal of its own to cut the deficit to one. However, at this point,
it seems as if CU went home for the period, as they were outplayed badly
for the last 12 minutes of the period and Vermont took a commanding 5-1
lead after 2 periods of play.

Vermont added an empty netter in the third, a hat trick for Perrin,
and CU added two to make the game interesting and a closer final score
of 6-3.

My Comments: There were many many fights throughout the contest. A total
of four game disqualifications were handed out. For Clarkson the DQ's
went to Chris deRuiter and to Scott Ricci. For UVM the DQ's were handed
out to J.C Ruid and to Jon Sorg. All four players are also ineligible to
play in the next game for each respective team. For the game over 102
minutes in penalties were called. The game was hot and heated right from
the beginning, and goalie Tim Thomas of Vermont let the crowd know at
the end of the game what he thought of them. A very emotional contest
to say the least. Could even be a precursor to the ECAC Championship game???

For next week, Clarkson takes on North Country rival St. Lawrence, whose
only loss in league play this season has been to Clarkson earlier in the
year. SLU looks to not only avenge that loss, but also to break of streak
of losing 9 straight games to its North Country rival. I expect that
game to be another very emotional heated contest, not only on the ice
but also in the stands.

For anyone interested, Clarkson will be hosting its Centennial Celebratio
that weekend, and plan on showing the CU-SLU game on twenty foot screen
in Cheel Arena on saturday night. Contact CU tix office for more info at
315-268-7750.

Overall, this weekend, puts SLU and UVM at the top of the ECAC with each
team having 19 points in playing 11 games. Colgate is third with 16 points
and 12 games played. Tied for fourth are CU and Harvard. CU has played
11 games, with Harvard having participated in 13 contests thus far.
