Just to get the rest of my licks in, I doubt that only 45% of Div 1-A
schools lose money on football.  I don't think that the NCAA is an entirely
objective on the subject.  One of my main sources is the book College
Sports, Inc.  by Murray Sperber.  Mr. Sperber's claim is that only about
five football programs in the country actually make money.  I think he
overstates his case, but is probably closer to the truth than the NCAA
testimony.  A lot of expenses are buried outside the athletic departments,
distorting the figures.  I do recommend the book, both on this subject and
several others surrounding college athletics.
