A couple of other (trivial) points to add to Dave Erickson's brief history of the Governor's Cup Tournament: Mike Gilligan, coach of UVM, is a close friend of Billy Riley from Mike's days coaching at Salem State. Apparently Mike helped Billy a bit in dreaming up the idea, with Billy using Mike as sort of a "sounding board" for his ideas. When the original idea was revisited a few years ago, the plan was for the FIVE New England state schools to take part. UMass and UMass-Lowell were to rotate on an every-other-year basis. UMass didn't want to rotate and instead took a "we're either going to be in it every year or not at all" attitude. For whatever reason, no one gave in to UMass' demands, and the roster consists of UVM, UNH, UML and UMaine. - Steve ----------------------[Reply - Original Message]---------------------- Sent by:"David B. Erickson" <[log in to unmask]> Deron Treadwell posed the question, more or less, of *Where did this Governor's Cup come from, anyway?* Well, Deron, it's a loo-o-o-n-nng story: The Governor's Cup tournament was the brain-child of former U-Lowell mentor Bill Riley, who first broached the idea ten (? give or take a decade) years ago; gestation was obviously long and difficult. About two years ago the concept surfaced again, and was greeted with enthusiasm by the coaches. The athletic directors got involved, as they had to, and it was former U-MA/Lowell AD Wayne Edwards who spearheaded the organizing effort.
