Various notes from the 7/7/95 Minnesota Daily: HS summer hockey camp Woog's contract Olympic Festival Godbout Working Out again Headline: U hockey coaches eye prep stars Publish Date: 07/07/1995 Matthew Cross For The Daily The first of two summer hockey camps opened Wednesday at Mariucci Arena, and Gophers coaches are getting a good look at some of the hottest high school prospects in Minnesota. The 216 players are the top Minnesota high school juniors and seniors and most of them received invitations. However, some of the players applied themselves. Even though the Gophers coaches cannot say which players they are watching, chances are Duluth East's Dave Spehar and Chris Locker, and Bloomington Jefferson's Ben Clymer, Ryan Trebil and Chris Theis will get a lot of attention. In all, the Gophers will lose 11 players after the 1995-96 season, so these summer camps will be an important part of the team's future. Minnesota loses all but three defensemen and one goaltender. The second 10-day camp takes place in late July. Each day includes three sessions stretching from 9 a.m. to about 4:15 p.m. The latest on Woog's contract Gophers coach Doug Woog said Wednesday that he doesn't expect anything to happen with his contract talks until University President Nils Hasselmo returns from vacation next week. Woog is reportedly asking for a long-term deal worth about $100,000 per year, making him one of the highest paid coaches in the WCHA. U.S. Olympic Festival Ten Gophers hockey players have been selected to play in the 1995 U.S. Olympic Festival in Denver, Colo., from July 24-30. The Gophers will be split into four different teams. Team North will feature incoming freshmen forwards Mike Anderson and Wyatt Smith, and Ryan Kraft, who was named to the WCHA all-rookie team. Senior defenseman Dan Trebil and 1995 Hobey Baker Award finalist Brian Bonin will play for Team South. Team East has forwards Casey Hankinson and Erik Rasmussen, the 1995 Minnesota Mr. Hockey recipient. WCHA Rookie of the Year Mike Crowley, and forwards Nick Checco and Reggie Berg will play for Team West. There are 80 players in the Olympic Festival, which includes 24 native Minnesotans. Godbout improves Gophers defenseman Jason Godbout began workouts recently after undergoing heart surgery earlier this spring to repair a hole in his right atrium. Godbout had a minor stroke before the team's NCAA Regional game against Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute on March 24. He started lifting weights and has done some light skating. Fellow defenseman Dan Trebil recently skated with Godbout and said the sophomore is in good condition and improving every day.
