With the NHL Entry Draft tomorrow, thought everyone might be interested in the following (Jeff - CCHA): NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE CCHA Last month, Ohio State signed John Markell to a three-year contract as the Buckeyes head coach. Markell compiled a 2-7 mark as interim head coach following Jerry Welsh's resignation. Three CCHA players were named to the District IV Academic All-America At-Large team. Bowling Green senior and Hobey Baker Award winner Brian Holzinger was joined by Western Michigan junior defenseman Darren Maloney and Ohio State senior forward Adam Smith. The only U. S. collegian invited to the Canadian National Junior Team Evaluation camp to be held in Montreal from August 12-18 is University of Michigan left wing Jason Botterill. Two current CCHA head coaches have been selected to coach in the 1995 U. S. Olympic Festival scheduled for July 21-30 in Boulder, Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado. Miami University's Mark Mazzoleni will be the head coach of Team South and he will be assisted by Alaska Fairbanks head coach Dave Laurion. Former UAF head coach Don Lucia, currently head coach at Colorado College, will be the head coach of Team West. Current CCHA players selected to participate in the U. S. Olympic Festival for Team North are Lake Superior goalie John Grahame, Lake Superior forward Brian Felsner and Michigan forward Matt Herr along with Michigan State recruit Chris Bogas. Six CCHA players will be playing for Team South including Michigan State netminder Chad Alban, Ferris State defenseman Andy Roach, Bowling Green forward Brad Holzinger, Lake Superior forward Terry Marchant and incoming forwards Sean Ritchlin (Michigan) and Jason Sessa (Lake Superior). Representing Team East will be blueliners Keith Aldridge (Lake Superior), Chris Fox (Michigan) and Chris Slater (Michigan State), and forwards Jon Battaglia (Lake Superior), Sean Berens and Tony Tuzzolino (Michigan State) and Kevin Hilton (Michigan). Michigan recruit Andrew Berenzweig, a defenseman, is the lone member of Team West. The 1995 National Hockey League Entry Draft will be held in Edmonton on Saturday, July 8. Many other CCHA recruits will be drafted in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft because they were born in 1977 or 1978 and are not eligible for this year's draft. Miami University's Randy Robitaille Ottawa (CJHL) University of Notre Dame's Forrest Karr Wisconsin (USHL) Former Lake Superior forwards Jim Dowd and Brian Rolston will have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup following New Jersey's sweep of Detroit. Former UAF defenseman Shawn Chambers was also member of the Devils. Last year, two former Western Michigan stars had their names engraved as members of the New York Rangers. Goalie Glenn Healy and President/General Manager Neil Smith both played collegiately for the Broncos. When the Edmonton Oilers won following the 1989-90 season former CCHA stars Joe Murphy (MSU) and Craig Simpson (MSU) were key members. Brian MacLellan (BGSU) and Jamie Macoun (OSU) were member of the 1988-89 Calgary Flames Stanley Cup championship team. Mike Krushelnyski (St. Louis University) and Craig Simpson (MSU) were members of the 1987-88 Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup championship team. Krushelnyski was also member of the Oilers championship team in 1984-85 and again in 1986-87. Former Bowling Green defenseman Ken Morrow won four straight Stanley Cup championships with the New York Islanders (1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83) following his 1980 Olympic Gold Medal performance for Team USA. A number of former CCHA players played on championship teams during the 1994-95 season: Matt Ruchty (BGSU) and Bill Armstrong (WMU) played for the AHL champion Albany River Rats. The IHL champion Denver Grizzlies had Kip Miller (MSU) and Jeff Madill (OSU) as their leading scorers. Richmond Renegades of the ECHL had former Laker blueliner Darrin Wetherill, while the Colonial League's Thunder Bay Senators had Barry McKinlay (UIC) and Llew Ncwana (BGSU).
