Arthur Berman [log in to unmask] wrote I thought I'd share something which might shed some light on the old (I know) UMass/UMass-Amherst controversy. I just received a church newsletter from a friend in Wisconsin (location not revealed for fear of wrathful badgers :-). In it a guest was described as having "received his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison." In Wisconsin there are 15(?) schools in the state system, and all of them are called University of Wisconsin-Something. Outside of Wisconsin people only have to say Wisconsin to mean Madison because it is the most "famous", but for us locals (and Madison wannabes) we say UW-Madison, or just call it Madison. For the hockey flavor of the message just look to DIII for the names of some of the other schools, Stevens Point, Superior, River Falls. -- Matthew Evans Office (414) 229-6722 Phys 56 [log in to unmask] Lab (414) 229-3936 Phys 42 University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Dept. of Physics
