Just my couple of comments here to preface today's article from the Minnesota Daily: I'm sorry to see Butters go. He has done a good job with the Minnesota defensemen the last few years, especially two years ago when the defense was decimated by injuries and the Gophers regularly played four freshmen on D. I had heard of his interest in the Bethel job a couple years ago, though, and was surprised to hear of him taking it now, when he hadn't before. But it is good to hear that Jason Godbout should be fully recovered by next fall! -Pam Go Gophers!!! 1995 NC$$ Phinal Phour!!! ------------------------------------ Headline: U hockey assistant resigns Publish Date: 04/06/1995 Gophers hockey assistant coach Bill Butters has resigned to take a job as co-coach at Bethel College in St. Paul. Butters, who is a former defenseman for the Gophers from 1969-73, was in charge of the Gophers' defense and recruiting for nine years. A native of White Bear Lake, Minn., Butters played professional hockey for six years before he started coaching in 1979. His son, Ben, will join Butters at Bethel as a transfer hockey player from Dartmouth College. Godbout update Gophers rookie defenseman Jason Godbout, who suffered a minor stroke before Minnesota's game against Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute on March 24, is eager to get back on skates. Godbout is seeing a speech therapist to correct slurred speech he experienced during the stroke. He is scheduled to have surgery in mid-May to repair a small hole in his heart that was the cause of his condition. It is suspected that the hole has been there since birth, but doctors are requiring Godbout to have the hole repaired before he plays again. Godbout will be able to start conditioning two months after his surgery and is expected to be fully recovered in time to start the season next fall. Bell goes pro Gophers hockey co-captain Scott Bell has accepted a contract to play for the Minnesota Moose of the International Hockey League. Bell is expected to join the team this weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. He had 18 goals and 21 assists for the Gophers this season. -- Matthew Cross
