The Tigers made a great comeback in the third, but Wisconsin defeated Colorado College 4-3 in overtime tonight to claim the Broadmoor Trophy and a spot in the tournament next weekend. Both teams started out playing hard, and wanted to win this game. There was a lot more and heavier body checking throughout the game. CC got on the board first, as Peter Geronazzo had a clean shot to put a rebound right past Kirk Daubenspeck, and the Tigers were up 1-0 at the end of the first period. If it's any consolation to Gopher fans, sometime, either late in the first or in the second period, CC had a goal waved off for a man in the crease, the same thing that happened to Minnesota last night in overtime. (and the announcers were talking to Greg Shepherd during the first intermission of the Denver-Minnesota game, and he said he had seen that call on replay and thought it was the correct call.) The Badgers were able to tie it up at 17:30 of the second when Mickey Elick got the puck past Ryan Bach. It was tied at 1 going into the second intermission. Wisconsin thought they had the game in the bag after getting two quick goals in the third period by Jamie Spencer and E.J. Bradley, but the Tigers weren't about to give up yet. Just 55 seconds after Bradley's goal, Geronazzo put in a second one for CC to bring the game to within one. Within the last minute or two, Geronazzo was once again the man for the Tigers as he picked up a rebound from a David Paxton shot and somehow managed to stuff the puck under Daubenspeck's leg to barely cross the goal line and tie the game to send it into overtime. Unlike the last two games in the tournament that went to overtime, this overtime period didn't last all that long. During a scramble in the CC end, Maco Balkovec took a shot at the net and managed to squeak the puck in through Bach's legs at only 43 seconds in to take the championship. The tournament team (as far as I can remember; feel free to make corrections) D, Eric Rud, Colorado College D, Mark Strobel, Wisconsin F, Jason Elders, Denver F, Peter Geronazzo, Colorado College F, Ryan Kraft, Minnesota Tournament MVP : Kirk Daubenspeck, Wisconsin It was a tough loss for CC, but at least we got one of the trophies this year. The season isn't over yet, and now it's time to focus on regionals next weekend and find out where we get seeded tomorrow night.
