In pathetic display of hockey, the University of Vermont Catamounts lost to the Red Raiders of Colgate 4-1 at Starr Rink tonight. This is the second straight year in which the Catamounts have won the opening game of the quarterfinal series, only to lose the next two and not make the trip to the semifinals. UVM should be embarassed by the way they played tonight. It was like no-one cared. I have never seen such a worse display of hockey in the few years that I have kept track of UVM. This team should have beaten the pants off of Colgate but the Red Raiders came to play and UVM did not...plain and simple. UVM coach Mike Gilligan is the reason why they lost tonight. He kept the lines out on the ice way too long...they were tired, and couldn't work together like the first game. Gilligan doesn't motivate this team...he doesn't get his kids ready...psychologically...to play after a loss, like Saturday night. None of the UVM seniors tried to get this team going...no one cared. On the other side, Colgate played their best hockey of the season. I was very impressed with the defense, especially tonight. They shut the door and kept UVM off the board. When you stop St. Louis (65 pts.) and Perrin (60 pts.) from scoring, you should win. I wish Colgate luck in Lake Placid and I hope that someday UVM wakes up from their playoff nap.
