Richard Keyes deflected a shot taken from the point by Chris Slater late in the
second and Rem Murray beat Paul Spencer early in the third to lift Michigan
State to a 4-2 win over UIC tonight at Munn Ice Arena, as the Spartans swept
the Flames in the CCHA first round playoff series to advance to Joe Louis
Arena. The Spartans won their sixth in a row and seventh of their last eight
in advancing to the CCHA semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Bowling
Green for the fifth time this year in the nightcap on Saturday.

MSU had built a 2-0 lead with Slater's goal in the first and Mike Watt's break-
away goal early in the second, only to see UIC tie it with 2 goals in a span
of 42 seconds midway through the second. As they did last night, the Spartans
fell asleep after building a 2-goal lead. The only benefit tonight was that
they didn't have to come from behind to win.

With the win, Michigan State joins the other top 4 seeds who all swept their
first round series. Michigan closed out Ohio State 2-0, Bowling Green came
from behind to beat Notre Dame 5-4 (7 goals scored in the first, if the Munn
Arena scoreboard was correct), LSSU shut out WMU 5-0, and Miami beat Ferris
State 4-2. In the play-in game on Wednesday, Miami will travel to Sault Ste.
Marie to take on the Lakers. The winner will face Michigan in the first
semifinal at Joe Louis on Saturday (1 pm EST) while the Spartans and Falcons
will face off at 5 pm.

WVU '87, UTenn '92, MSU (an era came to an end today with the final home game
for MSU basketball coach Jud Heathcote. In true Heathcote style, his last
words were [paraphrased]: "And finally, it's going to be damn hard to root for
Michigan tomorrow." Spartan shooting guard Shawn Respert also ended his
stay at the Breslin Center, along with fellow Fire and Ice member Eric Snow.
In a rather classy exit, Respert knelt at the center of the court and kissed
the green "S" before waving to the crowd.) who the hell knows when?
