Michigan State at #7 (HEAL #12) and Northeastern at #10 (HEAL #18) show two important differences of RPI and HEAL. In the case of Michigan State, we have a team with a very good winning% and average schedule. But Michigan State has done relatively poorly against the top teams. Most of their wins are against lowly ranked teams. RPI doesn't measure that, just winning%. With HEAL, it matters who you beat. Northeastern (15-13-5) has a just above average winning%, but has played a difficult schedule. RPI counts the schedule difficulty more than HEAL and so gives Northeastern a relatively high ranking. HEAL ranks Northeastern more appropriately, in my opinion! :-) (If anyone has an idea on how to measure how HEAL and RPI treat schedule difficulty, I'd like to hear from you!) - The total "Division I games" to be played number seen near the top of this issue, now at 713, will increase as league tournament games are entered into the composite schedule data base. - Ignoring other effects, including other end of season games and the upcoming league tournaments, the upcoming Maine-New Hampshire series is important for both teams. The results if HEAL were used to rank the teams: - split: no effect (New Hampshire would increase it's lead over Minnesota slightly). - Maine wins both: Maine moves into a virtual tie with Michigan for #1 with New Hampshire dropping into a tie for #6 with Clarkson. - New Hampshire wins both: New Hampshire moves up to 4th as Maine slides back into a tie with Boston University for #2. On "The Heal Point System" ... The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams. On the Maine secondary school calculation ... "P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie, and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is 1.00. "T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams. "T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10. Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled. Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played, there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary results. Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L ([log in to unmask]) archives as file "9495COMP SCHEDULE". Copyright 1995 by Wayne T. Smith.
