Monday, February 27, 1995 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TECH TO FINISH REGULAR SEASON AT WISCONSIN SATURDAY-SUNDAY MTU Has Chance to Host First-Round WCHA Playoff Series This Week: The Michigan Technological University hockey team will travel to Madison, Wis., for a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with the University of Wisconsin Badgers this weekend. Saturday's (March 4) contest will faceoff at 7:05 p.m. (CST) while Sunday's rematch (March 5) is set for 4:05 p.m. Both games will be staged at the Dane County Coliseum (8,644). On Radio: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live on WZRK radio, 93.5 FM. Bob Olson, the dean of broadcasters in the WCHA, is in his 24th season as the voice of the Huskies. Volunteer assistant coach Darcy Way is back for his fifth year providing color commentary. The Records: MTU is 15-16-4 on the season overall and 12-15-3 in the WCHA. Wisconsin is 17-13-4 in all games and 15-11-4 in league play. The Coaches: Bob Mancini (Colorado College, 1982) is in his third year behind the bench at MTU. He owns a 45-56-14 record at the school and in four-plus years as a college head coach sports an 81-87-25 mark. Jeff Sauer (Colorado College, 1965) is in his 13th year in charge of the Wisconsin hockey program and owns a 340-187-27 record at the school. In 23-plus seasons as a college head coach, Sauer is 506-413-38. The Series: Michigan Tech and Wisconsin will meet for the 98th and 99th times this weekend. In the all-time series, which dates back to the 1927-28 season, Wisconsin owns a 55-36-0 advantage. The Badgers swept the Huskies earlier this season in Houghton, Mich., by 7-6 and 4-1 counts (Nov. 11-12). Coach Mancini on the Wisconsin Series: "This ia an important series for both teams in regard to positioning for the playoffs. We need to use the games in Wisconsin to get back on a winning track and prepare ourselves for the playoffs." Coach Mancini on the Colorado College Series: "Despite losing two games, I was very pleased with our team's performance. They never quit and five-on-five I thought we had the better of the play for most of the weekend." The Mahwah, New Jersey, native has 19 goals and 21 assists in 34 games played. Mikesch suffered the injury during the first period of last Saturday's (Feb. 25) game at Colorado College. He is MTU's leading scorer with 13-28--41 . . . Junior defenseman Jason Wright (Thunder Bay, Ont.) will enter this weekend's series at Wisconsin with a four-game point streak (2-4--6). Former MTU standout Jim Carroll (1986-90) will appear on the popular television game show "Wheel of Fortune" Thursday (March 2). MTU witnessed the presentation of the MacNaughton Cup to Colorado College following last Saturday's game. It marked the second straight year the Huskies witnessed the event as the Tigers were presented the MacNaughton Cup just prior to the first game of the first-round WCHA playoff series between the two schools a year ago. Freshman forward Jimmy Roy (Thunder Bay, Ont.) recorded the first multiple-goal game of his MTU career last Saturday at Colorado College with a two-goal effort. He had 2-1--3 in the weekend series with the Tigers . . . MTU had 69 shots on goal in its two games at CC last weekend, the second most in a WCHA road series this year. MTU Hockey To Celebrate 75 Years At Reunion This Summer: One of the biggest events in Michigan Tech's hockey history will take place in conjunction with Alumni Homecoming Aug. 3-5 on the Michigan Tech campus as the Huskies celebrate 75 years of hockey.
