The Bowling Green vs. Ohio State game just finished about 20 minutes ago with the Falcons dishing out a 6-1 drubbing of the Buckeyes. It was a 2-1 game going into the third period when BG would score 4 goals to beat OSU. BG opened the scoring at 5:52 of the opening stanza with Brett Punchard scoring his 13th goal of the season. Assists went to Mike Hall and Kelly Perrault. Pierre DuFour would tie the game at 1 apiece for his 13th goal of the year with Sacha Guibeault getting the assist. Brian Holzinger would score the eventual game winner at the 16:50 mark of the first on a breakaway for his 31st lamp lighter of the season. The assist went to Tod Kelman. The breakaway was the fifth of the weekend for Holzinger who was stoned on the previous four before scoring. The second period proved to be the most exciting when there was a huge fight with about 3 minutes left. BG defenseman Brandon Carper was hit from behind by Chad Power resulting in a delayed penalty. As play was continuing up ice into OSU's zone, the players were doing a little bumping when BG's Kevin Lune and OSU's Taj Shaffnit had words and began to wrestle. Lune wanted to hold on and wrestle but Shaffnit seemed like he wanted to fight so both guys dropped the gloves. They fell to the ice where they were broken up. Both received fighting penalties and game disqualifications because they dropped the gloves (even when no punches were thrown, this is an automatic call). This is where things got nasty. Nobody escorted the players off of the ice and they began to fight in the tunnel. In a fighting/game disqualification situation, the players are to be escorted off the ice one at a time so nothing else happens. But the referees allowed them both to leave at the same time so there was only about 10 feet between the one player walking in front of the other. Again, words were exchanged, the gloves were dropped, but this time punches were thrown. The radio announcer said it was just like a boxing match- jabs and right/left hand hooks were thrown. Then OSU's Chad Power went off the ice and grabbed Lune before Falcon defenseman Brandon Carper went to the tunnel to get Power off of Lune. Columbus police had to break up Lune and Schaffnit and escort them to the dressing room. Both Lune and Schaffnit ended up getting double fighting/game disqualification penalties which makes them ineligible for both of their teams games next weekend as well as the opening game in the first round of the playoffs. This is the version of what happened as told by BG assistant coach Brian Hills on the radio post game show. So things might have happened differently depending on the way someone looked at it. The third period wasn't as physical but was more offensive than the other periods. Dale Crombeen, Mike Hall, Jamie Williams, and Curtis Fry all scored for the Falcons to give to end the game and give BG sole posession of second place in the CCHA with 34 points. There were many penalties in this game giving the Buckeyes somewhere around 11 power plays and BG around 7 power plays. The goal by Fry in the third period for BG was the only power play goal scored by either team. There was very few occasions where the game had a steady flow as whistles were always being blown for one reason or another. BG finishes their regular season next weekend with home games vs. Lake Superior on Friday night and Ferris State on Saturday. With the Buckeyes finishing last place in the league, they have two more regular season games plus a preliminary game om March 7th vs. Alaska Fairbanks to see which team stays in the CCHA playoffs. Alex's 3 stars: 1.Bob Petrie(BG) 2.Brian Holzinger(BG) 3.Dave Faulkner(BG) Holzinger for Hobey Baker!!!!
