Senior Night saw seven seniors skate for their last time in the regular season
at Munn Ice Arena tonight: Matt Albers, Mike Buzak, Steve Guolla, Rem Murray,
Steve Suk, Chris Sullivan, and Dean Sylvester. Fortunately, the Spartans got
their act (another word came to mind, but there might be kiddies in the audi-
ence) together to preserve the Senior Night winning streak at 6. Sean Berens
tallied his second consecutive shorthanded goal late in the second to erase
a 1-0 deficit and the Spartans added three third period goals, including the
first by junior Anson Carter in 7 games and the first by freshman Richard
Keyes in 7 games to give MSU the 4-1 victory. Berens is proving to be one of
the Spartans' better penalty killers while Keyes continues his ability to draw
penalties on the defense (at least 2 of the hooking calls against ND tonight
came on solo efforts by Keyes).

All is still not well though in Green and White country. The Spartans looked
lackluster, especially in the second period, and posted another goose-egg in
the power play column. In their last seven games, the Spartans are now 2 of
37 with the man-advantage (that's less than 6%, boys and girls). Even shaking
up the power play by having Rem Murray play the point instead of Steve Suk did
not solve the power play problem. (Some credit must go here to ND goalie Matt
Eisler, who made some excellent saves in the game, including an awesome save
to stop the Spartans from going up 2-1 with about :10 left in the second. It
appears that the Irish have the kind of goaltender now that you can build a
winning program on.)

At last report, BG led OSU 7-5 late in the third, LSSU had beaten WMU by a 3-2
tally, and Miami was tied with UIC 5-5 in OT. Should those scores hold up,
BG would maintain their one-point lead over LSSU and MSU for second, while
Miami would fall to fifth with the tie. Tomorrow night, the Lakers and Broncos
face off again in the Soo, while BG and Miami finish their series with OSU and
UIC respectively. The Spartans travel to Big Rapids to take on Ferris State
(who was losing 6-2 in Ann Arbor to Michigan) while ND heads home to take on
the Wolverines.
