They felt that the University reflects a positive image on the Miami >Tribe and the nickname is not used in a derogatory manner. > >If you argued to change the nickname, wouldn't you similarly have to argue to >change the name of the school? > Not necessarily. Is there a more derogatory name for Native Americans than "Redskins"? Is there a difference between a team called the Washington Redskins and the New York Niggers? Most schools try and be very sensitive to the issue. It is the insensitive fans who dress up and might be unkowingly commiting sacrilege against some Indian ceremony that are the problem. Indian mascots perpetuate stereotypes. Schools try and fix this, which is good. So, names like Maimi or Illni aren't offensive, just perpetuate the image of Indians you saw in the movies as a kid. I find names like "Redskins" and "Niggers" offensive. Every person and every band of Indians have their own opinions. The Cherokee make those damn foam rubber tomahawks for the Braves and it appears the Maimi don't mind "Redskins". Most Native Americans I know don't mind the names, but they do mind Joe Sixpack wearing face paint and doing war chants. Brad And ON WISCONSIN!
