From the Cornell Daily Sun Mon., 20 Feb 1995 Headline: Women Icers Finish Year With Home Split By BRENNAN BUCK Athough the Cornell women's hockey team fell short of makng the ECAC playoffs, the Big Red (7-15, 5-8 ECAC) concluded a positive season this weekend. The squad split its pair of games, crushing Yale, 4-0, on Saturday and losing to Princeton, 5-2, on Sunday. By winning seven games on the year and skating with nearly every opponent it faced in the second half of the campaign, coach Julie Andeberhan's team has begun to turn around a program that has struggled in recent years. "Regardless of the record...it has been a really successful season," Andeberhan said. On Saturday, the Red dominated throughout the entire game, outshooting the Elis 43-7. Cornell proved to be the faster, more powerful team, and although the contest was scoreless after the first, Yale was never in the game. The Red was unable to score in the first despite taking 16 shots, largely because of the outstanding play of Eli's goalie Laurie Belliveau. Red freshman Janna Dewar opened the scoring 7:36 into the second period, taking the puck from the left corner, skating across the crease and tucking the puck past Belliveau. After an unassisted goal by sophomore Tracey Cornell to close the second period scoring, Dewar tallied her second goal 3:18 into the final stanza. A pass from Cornell was tipped to Dewar in front of the net by freshman Erin Schmalz and the wide open Dewar flipped the puck into the net. Ten seconds later, Red sophomore Jessica Becker was called for roughing, giving Yale a man advantage. With a minute left in the power play, Dewar, the team's leading scorer, stole an Eli pass in her opponent's end and skated to the net, scoring unassisted to complete the hat trick. The 4-0 win matched the final score of Cornell's win in New Haven in January and extended the team's winning streak over the Elis to 22 games. On Sunday, the Red kept even with a strong Princeton squad in the first period. After a goal by Princeton forward Many Pfeiffer late in the first, Schmalz evened the score with just 23 seconds left in the period. Tiger defenseman Heather Cowan put her team up for good in the second with a low shot in the left corner under Red senior goalie Sarah Brewster. After seeing little action in her own end the day before, Brewster played an exceptional game, stopping 31 shots, including a number of spectacular saves in the second. Sue Reece scored two goals early in the third to put the game away for Princeton. The senior defenseman took a slap shot from the blue line that slid under Brewster 4:12 into the period. She then caught Cornell off guard during a line change a minute later. Taking the puck at center ice, Reece beat a single Red defender and put the puck part Brewster. The game ended the careers of three seniors, Brewster, Pam Archabal, and co-captain Christine Stewart. Andeberhan commended all three players for their leadership abilities and contributions that have helped the team to improve. I will be writing a season wrap-up sometime during the week... -Mike
