With Minnesota's loss to Denver and Colorado College's win over North
Dakota 3-2, the "magic number" has been reduced to one game for the Tigers.
In the first period, it looked like more of the same from last night. CC
wasn't playing well and allowed the Sioux two goals. The first one, scored
by Scott Kirton, bounced off of Lambert and into the net. The second was
scored by Darcy Mitani, who easily walked in on Lambert while the defense
was taking a nap.
The Tigers finally woke up at 6:55 of the second, when freshman Travis
Cheyne stuffed in an attempt by Calvin Elfring by Toby Kvalevog. That seemed
to get the team fired up and they played a lot better the rest of the period.
In the third, Colin Schmidt, one of the WCHA's leading scorers, tied up the
game at 1:01. Then, at 18:03 R.J. Enga gave the Tigers the lead for the first
time this entire weekend, and the defense held on the last two minutes to win
the game.
Next week the Tigers return home to host Michigan Tech in a Sat night/Sun
afternoon series, and the final weekend of the regular season is a home and
home with Denver. CC needs to win only one of these last four games to
guarantee themselves a second straight WCHA title.
