Clarkson had its chances last nighta gainst the Big Red, but couldn't finish. The first period was the key. The Knights got 16 shots on Cornell netminder Eddy Skazyk in the first frame, but couldn't beat him. Clarkson was flying for the first 20 minutes and totally dominated Cornell. But the tally was 0-0. The 2nd period, Clarkson came out a little slower and Cornell played much better. Clarkson seemed very deflated about dominating the first period and having nothing to show for it. All of a sudden, the chances that were there in the first period were no longer there. Passes weren't clicking. Hits weren't being made. The forechecking wasn't yielding the same results. Cornell went up 1-0 late in the 2nd when Bill Holawatiuk took advantage of poor clearing by the Golden Knights. The Knights defense had all kinds of problems and defensive lapses were too common for Clarkson in the 2nd and 3rd periods. In the third, Patrice Robitaille got Clarkson on the board on a tic-tac-toe passing play which led to Robtaille having an open net to shoot at. But the game winnner came on another defensive miscue. Clarkson defenseman Nicolas Windsor and a Cornell player were battling behind the boards. The Cornell player won the battle and slipped the puck in front to Jake Karam who was wide-open on the doorstep and he buried it past Clarkson goalie Dan Murphy. There is no excuse for why Karam was left untouched inches away from the crease. When the puck came in front, Murphy had barely turned his head before Karam banged it home. He was that close. Clarkson had a number of good chances late, but Skazyk was a wall in goal. The Knights tried a number of wraparounds but always chose to keep the puck at ice level rather than roof it. Consequently, each wraparound went right into Skazyk's stick. A key to the game was faceoffs, which Cornell badly dominated. I don't recall seeing Clarkson ever be so dominated in that category. It was very frustrating and really slowed down Clarkson's high flying attack.
