The championship game of the 1984 Great Lakes Invitational between Michigan
Tech and Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena drew 21,576 fans, which is the
true NCAA regular-season record crowd. As a matter of fact, those that were
at the game say there was more like 24,000-25,000 in attendance, however,
they were afraid to announce the true figure because of the fire marshall.
 
I saw in a clipping I received today that the announced crowd of 20,889 for
the Michigan-Notre Dame game at the Palace in late January was an NCAA
regular-seaosn record crowd.
 
That is simply not true.
