BEANPOT TV RATINGS Today's Boston Globe reports that the Beanpot final between BC and BU Monday night drew a 1.9 rating on WABU-68. That translates to 40,000 households out of 2.1 million. Last year's final drew a 2.4 rating on WSBK-38, and in 1993, it drew a 3.0, also on WSBK-38. The low rating is interesting since the amount of media present and apparent on the ice after the game was probably greater than I have ever seen it. Former Boston Herald and current Sports Illustrated writer Gerry Callahan may have a point when he says that the Beanpot is an event that for the most part is only followed by people from the four schools. There are those outside the scope of the four schools who are interested, but for the most part, I do think that the average area sports fan simply doesn't care. As a comparison, the weekly UMass hoop coach's show with John Calipari drew a 3.0 rating, and that was Sunday night at midnight. The Beanpot was played at 8 pm Monday night. But the Calipari show was shown on WBZ-4 and the Beanpot was on WABU-68...how available the latter was to all 2.1 million households is not known. PANDOLFO OUT 3-4 WEEKS Elsewhere, it is said that BU junior forward Jay Pandolfo, who had his left hand cut badly in the Beanpot final by the skate of BC's Ryan Haggerty when Pandolfo tried to grab a loose puck without a glove on, took 30-40 stitches in the hand and will miss 3-4 weeks. The Hockey East playoffs begin in 3 weeks. Pandolfo, not having a good year health-wise, also missed much of the first half of 1994-95 due to an injury suffered in the preseason. He's played well when he has been able to get out there, from what I've seen. --- --- Mike Machnik [log in to unmask] Cabletron Systems, Inc. *HMM* 11/13/93
