Harvard won the NCAA's in '89 with the freshman tandem of Chuckie Hughes
and Allain Roy. Hughes was in net for the 4-3 OT final vs. Minnesota. Roy
played in the 6-3 semi vs. Michigan State, and was spectacular, and was
goaltender in the all-tournament team, ahead of other top goalies, such
as the Gophers Robb Stauber, the previous year's Hobey winner. Roy had
what still counts in my book as one of the most spectacular saves ever, a
diving-backwards, heel of the stick stop on all-american Bobby Reynolds
attempted wrap-around, and later stopped Kip Miller (the next year's Hobey
winner) on a 1 on 0 breakaway. Roy was also the top goalie in the ECAC that
year. Not bad for freshmen.
