Boston College may have suffered more than the loss of a game tonight as Greg Taylor, in the midst of what had to be one of his best games, may have suffered a serious injury. With Maine up 2 - 1 and about 12 minutes gone in the second period Maine was putting on hard pressure. One bear had the puck deep to Taylor's right as Tim Lovell cut across the ice from the left boards. The pass to Lovell came across the crease and Taylor lunged to block it just as Lovell arrived. There was a thud you could hear around the Alfond, the crowd was instantly silenced, Lovell went flying head over heels, and Taylor fell like a tree. I didn't see him move for what seemed like a long time. Finally the trainer sat him up and he was eventually helped to the bench. While Correia warmed up, the trainer checked Taylor over: pinpoint flashlight in the eye, "Can you touch your nose?", etc. Then he sat slumped at the end of the bench. I haven't seen a player look this hurt since Mark Cornforth. Eventually common sense won out over macho; the game was stopped and Taylor was taken to the dressing room (and, I hope, to a hospital for a more complete checkup. That kid was hurt.) Lovell got two minutes for charging which I think was done on the basis of "Well, the goalie was injured, we have to call SOMETHING!" Despite the importance of Taylor to the team, nobody from BC seemed angry with Lovell. The all seemed to accept it as the chances of a rough sport and got back to the business at hand. Until the injury Taylor was the highlight of the game. He had 19 saves in the first period, many of them spectacular. Maine set up opportunity after opportunity only to be robbed by a flying goalie suddenly appearing from nowhere. At Maine's second goal, about midway in the second period I think, the shots stood 27 to 13. Allison was also sharp for Maine as BC had its chances including the fast breaks a team often gets after an opponent has had a big opportunity frustrated, but Maine's speed and passing ability gave the Bears clear domination. At the end of the game BC was worn out and Maine was skating circles around them. Maine's final goal was a SHG as Mahoney was caught delivering a cheap shot (well, TRYING to deliver a cheap shot) since the penalty couldn't hurt. The game was in its last minute. Somebody in Boston keep the lest posted on Taylor's condition. The guy played like a Hobey Baker candidate tonight and was named the game's second star.
