Minnesota looked really good Saturday night in their 7 - 4 victory over CC. The Golden Goph's brought their power play back from the dead and converted on 5 of 9 power play opportunities. The question is, however, were the Goph's we saw on Saturday night for real? Saturday night was no doubt the Goph's best game all season. Can they continue to play at that level? In my opinion, it looks like the Gophers are starting to gel. The shots right in front of the goal are finally starting to go in. If the Gophers can continue to play like they played Saturday there's a good chance the Goph's could still make 2nd place in the WCHA. For the weekend, MN has to be pleased with both games. The Gophers scored the first goal in both games. I don't think the Goph's scored first in two consecutive games all season. MN's defense is looking good. Callinan, while not totally brilliant over the weekend, still leads the WCHA statistically. It appears that if the Gophers score goals, Callinan is good enough to hold a lead. Minnesota's goal scorers finally started burying the puck. McHugh, Bonnin and Bell all had great games on Saturday. The looming question still stands, however, was Saturday a fluke, or can the Gophers continue to play this way? Well I don't thing you beat CC 7 - 4 on a fluke. I think that the Gophers are starting to look like they looked the first 6 games of the season -- scoring the big goals, skating well and passing well. The answer can only come this weekend in Madison. Reed On a personal note: A CC fan sitting in the student section brought a broom into Marriucci arena on Saturday night. The fan took a great deal of abuse before a security guy came down and took the broom away from him. Beating CC was especially gratifying after seeing this fan carry on about sweeping MN. As the clock ran out on Saturday night, the student section also lustily chanted USA... USA... in response to beating the 75% Canadian-comprised CC team.
