"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends ...": well actually the Husky Invitational did finally end, Sunday afternoon at Matthews with UNH getting a hand from the refs. and recording a 4-1 win over Providence College. New Hampshire got away with some pretty cheap play. The Friars did not play great, but deserved a more level playing surface. PC opened the scoring in the first when Stephanie O'Sullivan (Karen McCabe) broke in all alone and deked the goalie for a wonderful goal. The situation happened during a spell of 4 on 4 play. In the second the UNH Wildcats came back when Heather Reinke (Brandy Fisher) finished off a nice 1-2 right in front of net. UNH went ahead 2-1 when Fisher (Sarah Holt) was left all alone and drilled her shot through the Friar goalie. The PC defense made a number of errors which resulted in players being wide open. At that point the refs. called a series of penalties on Providence. UNH was committing a number of offenses, but getting away with it. The resulting two power play goals put the game away. I'll have to say this game had all the excitement of watching water freeze. Providence College had a good weekend at the Husky Invitational. They played powerful Concordia to a four all draw and were in the lead for most of the game. Against host Northeastern they looked tired, but still managed another tie. First-year goalie Meghan Smith had a strong match today. She is an excellent stand-up goalie who is going to be a major player for PC. O'Sullivan made a number of wonderful break in plays. Her power rushes and shooting ability are classic. She needs another linemate, with speed if she is going to be more effective. Alison Wheeler also had a number of good rushes. Alana Blahoski showed some flashes of brilliance on the attack today. Playing as a center for most of the game, she was able to use her speed to create chances. That kid is fun to watch. Blahoski, Wheeler and O'Sullivan might be an interesting combination. I could see those three feeding well off each other. Overall, PC lacks a coherent offensive plan, but they sure have some interesting players. _____________ / good shooting rhun _____________/
