MTU won a needed game last night to move them into a tie for fifth palce in the WCHA. In all periods, St. Cloud game out strong for about the first two minutes. After that MTU adjusted to St. Cloud and took the game away. St Cloud started the game with their full team for first time this season as the players with injury have returned. In the first period, both teams scored on their first shot on net. St. Cloud took the lead at 1:06 when Gasseau took a pass from Lund. Gasseau was alone in front and beat Caravaggio. MTU came right back at 2:06 when Liam Garvey broke down the right side and passed off to Kyle Peterson who back handed a shot on Leitza's glove side. This took the wind from St. Cloud and MTU took the momentum for the rest of the period. In the 2nd period, St. Cloud again came out strong scoring just 36 seconds into the period when Lievers punched a shot to the right of Caravaggio on a powerplay. However, MTU regained momentum when MTU's Pat Mikesch got called for a 5 minute major checking from behind. St. Cloud's Santare did something extremely stupid by getting up and punching Pat Mikesch for which he received a 5 minute major and a DQ. Had he kept his cool, St. Cloud may have gotten the knock out blow against MTU as they were playing well up to this point. However, Santare's penalty nullified Pat Mikesch's and proved the game game turning point. MTU started to attack and it paid off. Hultgren in order to thwart an MTU drive tossed the puck out of the rink for which he received a 2 minute minor delay of game. This lead to MTU's Jeff Mikesch scoring at 10:06 on a powerplay. Several shots were put on goal in quick succession, which were duly blocked by Leitza. Jeff picked up a free rebound in front and managed finally to get it by Leitza. MTU's Mike Figliomeni who hasn't seen much action this year chipped a shot over Leitza after another pass from Garvey at 14:07. At 16:50, Brent Peterson stole the puck in center ice and went 1 on 1 with Leitza. Leitza managed to partially block the shot, but the puck dribbled into the net. At 18:24, as Andre Savage was breaking free on a charge down the slot, an unidentified St. Cloud player grabbed his shirt and hauled him to the ice. Savage received a rare penalty shot but could not score on Leitza as the shot went high. In the third, St. Cloud came out the gates hard, but like most horses that charge out of the gate lost their stride. This time MTU was able to close them down before they did any damage. St. Cloud got a powerplay score at 11:59 when Caravaggio after blocking a shot was on the ice. St. Cloud's Liever put his second goal of the night over Caravaggio's hapless body. The period ended when Randy Stevens got an empty netter at 19:45. MTU is now 8-8-1 in the WCHA and 11-9-2 overall. What is unigue about this season is that they are 6-2-2 on the road.
