As Eric Rickin mentioned, Michigan came out flying then
went into their sluggish mode following the 2-0 lead. They
were getting some shots on goal, but seemed a bit lax
overall and allowed the Irish some good scoring chances,
including Jamie Ling's shorthanded goal...his 99th career
collegiate point.

But, the Wolverines seemed intent on punishing ND physically
and on the scoreboard, and they started to click again in the
second period.

The end of the second saw a fairly good size fracas. From
my vantage point, it began with ND's John Rushin and UM's
Blake Sloan shoving near the blueline as the seconds ticked
away. When the horn sounded to end the period, Sloan
dropped Rushin and everyone paired off, save the netminders.
UM's Brendan Morrison was landing some blows behind the
net and UM's Jason Botterill and his dance partner had a
mild flurry. Referee Steve Piotrowski decided to give all ten
of them 4 minutes...high sticking plus roughing. I was relieved,
because the activity was bordering on DQs, with Rushin, Sloan,
Morrison, Botterill and 1-2 more Irish being candidates. But,
Piotrowski tossed 'em all in the box, the others being guilty
by association, and let things cool down some.

In the third, ND captain Brett Bruininks decided to take matters
into his own hands, picking up three minor penalties in the
first 5:54...resulting in one UM power play goal. Following that,
the only thing of interest was if Michigan could hit double digits.
There was one more late skirmish, with ND's Ben Nelsen and
Carey Nemeth jumping UM's Warren Luhning in the corner.
Michigan's Kevin Hilton, boasting 26 penalty minutes in 90
career games, dove in to assist Luhning and displayed some
solid amateur wrestling moves. I didn't know Kevin had it
in him!

In other news, Michigan captain Rick Willis missed the game
due to the flu, and, although the personal -- particularly the
defensive pairs -- changed some during the game, for the
most part coach Red Berenson sported the following new
lines and pairs:

  Jason Botterill-Brendan Morrison-Mike Knuble
  John Madden-Kevin Hilton-Warren Luhning
  Matt Herr-Robb Gordon-Bill Muckalt
  Mike Legg-Ron Sacka-John Arnold
  Blake Sloan-Peter Bourke
  Chris Fox-Steven Halko
  Harold Schock-Alan Sinclair

It's the first time I can remember the freshman trio of
Herr, Gordon and Muckalt playing together.

Next up: Michigan is at Ohio State and Western Michigan
next Friday and Saturday in their final games prior to the
Great Lakes Invitational.
