Huskies Hints: The Huskies will have 19 days off for the Christmas holidays
before hosting the 30th annual Great Lakes Invitational Dec. 29-30 at the
Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The 19 days represents the longest break for an
MTU team during the holiday season since the Huskies had 20 days off in
1978-79 . . .. Freshman defenseman Tim Harris (100 Mile House, B.C.) played
his first games of the season last weekend at Alaska Anchorage. Harris had
been saddled with a hip flexor injury for the majority of the first half of
the season . . . MTU got its eighth win of the season last Friday (Dec. 9)
at Alaska Anchorage in its 16th game of the season. Last year it took MTU
until its 32nd game to pick up win number eight . . . The Huskies win last
Friday (Dec. 9) at Alaska Anchorage was its first ever vs. the Seawolves
and first ever in the state of Alaska. Coming into the contest, MTU was
0-5-2 vs. UAA and 0-7-1 in the state of Alaska . . . Senior defenseman
Jason Hanchuk (Nepean, Ont.) gained the first shorthanded goal of his
career last Friday (Dec. 9) at Alaska Anchorage. The goal came with the
Huskies two men down. Hanchuk has four goals on the season, one more than
in his first two years combined as a Husky . . . The Huskies are 5-2-2 in
nine road games this year . . . MTU recorded a season-high 47 shots on goal
in its 4-2 loss at Alaska Anchorage last Saturday (Dec. 10) . . . The
Huskies had a season-high 20 shots on goal in the third period of last
Saturday's (Dec. 10) game at UAA . . . Sophomore center Andre Savage
(Ottawa, Ont.) recorded his third multi-point game of the season last
Friday (Dec. 9) with 0-2--2 at UAA. The effort was also the first
multi-assist game of his career . . . Senior right wing Randy Stevens
(Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), who has missed eight games to injury this year,
gained his first goal of the season last Saturday (Dec. 10) at UAA.

GLI Notes: The GLI was the brainchild of legendary MTU coach John MacInnes,
who guided the Huskies from 1956-82 . . . The first GLI was played in 1965
at Olympia Arena in Detroit. The event was staged there until 1979 when it
moved into its current home, the Joe Louis Arena . . . MTU has won nine GLI
titles, more than any other school . . . The Huskies, however, have not won
the GLI title since 1980 . . . MTU looks to make it to the event's title
game for the first time since 1991 . . . MTU Athletic Director Rick Yeo
played in the first GLI back in 1965 . . . Michigan assistant coach Mel
Pearson, a 1981 graduate of Michigan Tech, ended the longest game in GLI
history as his goal at 2:28 of the third overtime gave the Huskies a 5-4
win over Michigan in the championship game . . . The Huskies have a 33-25-0
all-time record in the GLI . . . The John MacInnes Cup goes to the GLI's
winning team, while the John MacInnes Trophy is awarded to the tournament's
most valuable player . . . MTU, Michigan, Michigan State, and Northern
Michigan will make up the field for the 1995 GLI.
