Tigers shed jinx, trap Wildcats for eighth straight win

MARQUETTE, Mich. - No. 1 Colorado College ended an eight-year winless
streak at Lakeview Arena in convincing fashion Friday night, posting
an 8-2 victory over Northern Michigan.

The win improved CC's overall record to 13-2 and kept it atop the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 10-1 record.

NMU dropped to 6-9 overall and 5-8.

The Tigers extended their win streak to eight in a rink where they had
a 1-20-1 record, including an 0-16-1 mark since 1986.

"It was a great win for us," said CC coach Don Lucia. "We exorcised a
few ghosts tonight."

CC ended NMU's home hex early, jumping on starting goalie Dieter Kochan
for four goals in the opening 15:17.

CC goalie Ryan Bach stopped 33 of 35 shots. Both of NMU's goals occurred
when CC was short-handed.

CC's Chad Remackel opened the scoring at 5:34. Two minutes later, Jay
McNeill scored a power-play goal - the first of his two goals on the
night.

The Tigers added a goal by R.J. Enga at 14:21. Kochan was sent to the
bench at 15:17 when David Paxton pushed CC's lead to 4-0.

NMU coach Rick Comley inserted goalie Keith Bartholomaus and CC beat
him for two goals in each of the second and third periods.

The game ended with a brawl at center ice after NMU's Shayne Tomlinson
struck four or five CC players as he skated by the team's bench during
the final seconds.

"It was right out of 'Slap Shot,'" Lucia said, referring to the hockey
movie.

Tomlinson was called for elbowing. Comley said he would bench Tomlinson
in tonight's second game of the weekend series.
