CC beats up aggressive Seawolves
Tigers take advantage of penalties, explode in second period
by Steve Page

R.J. Enga took Chad Hartnell's lead pass, broke into the Alaska Anchorage
zone, deked the lone defender to the ice and wristed a 20-foot shot over
the right shoulder of goaltender Lee Schill and into the goal.

The Cadet Ice Arena crowd of 1,968 roared its approval Saturday afternoon.

Again and again. Eight times.

Enga and his Colorado College teammates shrugged off the Seawolves' frantic
forechecking - and took advantage of their penalties - to skate to an 8-4
victory in the opening game of a weekend Western Collegiate Hockey Association
series at Air Force. The rematch is at 2:05 p.m. today.

"We were patient and we took the right shots," said Enga, who also set up
three goals. "It's always good to get power-play goals and win the special-
teams battles."

CC connected on 4 of 8 power plays Saturday afternoon, including three
consecutive scores during a five-goal burst in a 6:21 span in the second
period.

Center Jay McNeill led the barrage with two power-play goals. One of winger
Peter Geronazzo's two scores came with CC up a man. Wing Jason Christopherson
scored one goal and set up another. Hartnell, Colin Schmidt and defenseman
Kent Fearns added two assists each as 13 Tigers notched points.

"We really moved well out there today," said McNeill. "You can stop two-on-
ones only so many times. We took advantage of those extra-man rushes."

Still, this win was not without a bit of worry for CC coach Don Lucia.

After surrendering five second-period goals to trail 6-1, the Seawolves
made it interesting in the third period with goals by Troy Norcross at 5:52
and Jack Kowal at 9:18. But that threat ended when CC's Stewart Bodtker
and Geronazzo scored goals 2:08 apart midway through the period.

"I was disappointed to give up three goals in the third period," Lucia said
after his club improved to 3-0 in the WCHA and 4-1 overall. "We were very
lax in that third period. You can't do that against Anchorage. They can
beat anybody they play."

Including themselves, according to UAA coach Brush Christiansen, who said,
"We played very foolishly in the second period. We took (four) foolish
penalties. Colorado College is quicker now. We can't let them work their
power play."

UAA, 1-4 in the WCHA and 2-5 overall, lost Schill to a second-period
concussion and fourth-line center David Vallieres to a shoulder injury.

McNeill and Enga worked a two-man rush deep into the Seawolves' ice during
the Tigers' second power play, with Enga breaking down the left side. When
he reached the goalmouth, Enga slipped the puck across the crease to McNeill,
who re-directed it into the open right side at 6:36 of the first period.

Enga converted Hartnell's lead pass into a 2-0 lead at 5:29 of the second
period to start the Tigers' barrage. McNeill canned a 10-ffot, power-play
rebound at 7:27, Christophersonnn scored a breakaway off Schill's glove at
9:49, Chad Remackel netted an 8-foot, power-play rebound at 11:07, and
Geronazzo added yet another power-play goal with a point-blank rebound
at 11:50.
