Newberry and North Dakota's Archibald had been yipping and yapping and scrapping with and at each other for most of the game. Penalties were assessed and, instead of "going directly to jail and not passing GO" Newberry swung by the Wisconsin bench, picked up a water bottle, skated past the North Dakota bench, and liberally squirted the bench with the water bottle. The ND bench emptied itself upon Newberry, the Wisconsin bench emptied on top of the assembled masses, and the rest is history. The fight did extend up into the stands, with some of Madison's finest becoming embroiled in the brouhaha as they attempted to restore some type of order to the stands.
