There still isn't a rink, but there's a very big hole! UNH kicked off
construction of the new student recreational sports facility and hockey
arena last Saturday afternoon. The "official" ground-breaking ceremony
featured speeches from UNH Interim President Fairchild, the leaders of
Student Government, Trustees and the UNH Foundation. The ceremony marked
the official start of the project which began in September. The UNH
Marching Band as well as the NH Gentlemen and Notables were also on hand.

Snively Arena has been gutted and the back wall of "The Barn" has been
completely removed. The bleachers, locker rooms, bathrooms, etc.. were
torn down, pushed into a big pile in the middle of the arena and then pushed
out the back to be hauled off. Snively will house an indoor track, weight
rooms, basketball- and racquetball-courts, storage areas, meeting rooms and
more. The new hockey arena will be built directly behind Snively and will
be attached to the new rec sports facility by a common entrance where the
back of Snively once stood. The new arena will feature an Olympic-size ice
sheet and will seat 6000 for hockey and besketball, and more for concerts,
convocations, etc... Project planners believe there will be no finer place
to watch or play hockey in the country when the new facility is complete.
While the project may still be in the early stages, officials continue to
stress that the project will be done by, or before, the Sept. 30, 1995
completion date. While I personally hope this is the case, we can only wait
and see what happens.

The Wildcats currently practice in Rochester, NH during the week--a 20 minute
bus ride from campus. UNH has 3 more "home" games in Portland, ME this season
(1 hour from campus) and 8 "home" games in Manchester, NH (roughly 45 minutes
from UNH). Next up, BC this Friday at 7 in Manchester. Early reports indicate
the game is a sellout, but standing room only tix should be available at the
door.
