----- Begin Included Message ----- Well, for those of you who might be interested (I actually am), ESPN has reached as far as they can reach by showing the (classic) USA vs. USSR 1980 Olympic game. It's scheduled for 8:30 Friday night. Some of you OLYMPUCK-ians may be intrigued as well. In plugging the game, ESPN's "motto" is: "Who says great hockey isn't on television?" (Or something like that! :-) ) ----- End Included Message ----- I'm surpised no one has talked about this game yet. I actually watched the whole game last Friday and I have a few comments. First, many people may not realize that the '80 USA team was essentially a college (well, Division I) hockey all-star team. In the interest of building college hockey tradition, I'm goint to try to list the roster. Pos Player School Comment ___ ______ _______ _________ Goal Jim Craig Boston University The somewhat reluctant hero. Craig Janezack(?) Wisconsin(?) The ultimate trivia question answer. Defense Jack O'Callahan BU Was injured for part of the tournament; the prototypical missing-tooth smile. Ken Morrow Bowling Green Went on to win 4 Stanley Cups; you should rub his head for good luck. Forwards Dave Silk BU Sometime Hockey-L contributor, current Wall Street operator. Mike Eruzione BU The years have been good to him Buzz Schneider Minnesota(?) Jeez, thats all I can remember!?! There was one other Bowling Green grad a couple of Minn-Duluth alumni. Most everyone else was a Badger or a Gopher Second, Ken Dryden may be a good writer, but I wasn't impressed with his color-commentary. My favorite moment of the game: Ken Dryden: "USA is depending too much on Jim Crai..." Al Michaels: "Eruzione with the puck, he shoots, he scores!!!!" Third, it has to be one of the top-five greatest moments in sports. Ken Kretsch | No wonder he remembered the BU guys! BU '79 | [log in to unmask] |
