According to yesterday's Washington Post, Jim Carey has signed a 4-year deal with the Washington Capitals and reported to training camp. They didn't give any details about the contract. This certainly complicates the goalie situation for the Capitals as they have Don Beaupre, the best goalie for them last year who is on a termination contract this year; Rick Tabaracci who was injured much of last year but was theoretically the starting/backup goalie (they didn't make up their minds); Olaf Kolzig who was the starring goalie in the Calder Cup finals, but who didn't do well when he substituted for Tabby with the Capitals; and Byron Dafoe who was a great goalie for the Portland Pirates and then did well when he substituted for the Capitals. General Manager David Poile was quoted as saying that they had all along planned to sign a fifth goaltender because they didn't feel they could send both Dafoe and Kolzig to Portland for another year. He also said that they expect Carey to be the backup at Portland this year unless he comes out and does incredibly well in training camp. This should be an interesting training camp for the goalies! If the papers here give any details about Carey's contract, I'll post them. Carol
