Several hockey-related blurbs in Charley Walters' sports-gossip column in the St. Paul Pioneer Press today (8/30/94). (quoted, so don't blame me for the wording, just for any typos...) Look for the Gophers' Doug Woog this week to submit a contract extension proposal that would, if accepted, rank him among college hockey's three top-paid coaches. The top two are Ron Mason of Michigan State and Jack Parker of Boston University. Woog's current contract has two years left at slightly more than $95,000, counting media income. The new deal is expected to tie up Woog, 50, for the next five years. Don't be surprised if Ron Docken from Minneapolis becomes the new goalie coach for Woog. The word in Madison is that former Burnsville hockey star Mark Osiecki is under consideration for an assistant coaching job at Wisconsin, his alma mater. And look for the Gophers to bid on the college all-star game that has been played in Bangor, Maine. Minnesota would like to hold the game in April in conjunction with the Hobey Baker Award weekend. Ex-Gopher Chris McAlpine is expected to receive a signing bonus of nearly $200,000 soon from the New Jersey Devils. The holdup is, as usual, the salary if he's sent to the minors. Look for Herb Brooks, the former NHL coach, to write a regular column this season for the "Let's Play Hockey" tabloid. It will be announced that the Dayton's and Target corporations on Monday agreed to a major sponsorship deal of Gophers men's athletics. The companies will be a big part of the Gophers' Thanksgiving holiday hockey tournament at the St. Paul Civic Center. Pam Sweeney Go Gophers!!!
