From: V5160::BAER "Ralph N. Baer" 18-MAY-1994 12:38:40.74 To: BAER CC: BAER Subj: A week or two ago, Jayson Moy posted a list of RPI recruits. He mentioned that Coach Powers had one more scholarship to fill. A few days later, I received a copy of the newspaper article that Jayson was quoting by snail mail confirming what Jayson wrote. I wonder if RPI really has one more scholarship to offer. In 1992-3, the scholarship limit was 20. Assuming that RPI was using all 20 of its scholarships that year, they still had 19 scholarship athletes for 1993-4 because there was only one senior on the 1992-3 team--Al Kummu. For 1993-4, the limit was lowered to 18 scholarships. This would mean that RPI was one over the limit. It is possible that the NC$$ would have allowed RPI to offer 19 scholarships in 1993-4, because it would have been unfair for RPI to be forced to withdraw a scholarship that an existing student had. Granted, not everything is fair in life, and the NC$$ does not do everything logically. If RPI did, indeed, have 19 scholarship athletes in 1993-4 and six were seniors (Cuthbert, Gabriel, Layzell, Little, Majic, and Pasco), this would mean that there would only be five scholarships to offer to incoming freshmen, and five athletes were listed in Jayson's post. Clearly, if some of the athletes are on partial scholarships, RPI still may have one to give. However, it is hard to believe that at a place that is as expensive as RPI, quality athletes would be easy to attract with less than a full scholarship. Please note that all of the above is speculation, I do not know if RPI has an open scholarship, but am interested in finding out if they do. The May 20 Hockey News arrived yesterday. On page 38 is the Central Scouting Bureau ordering of 1994 NRL draft-eligible hockey players. RPI recruit Doug Battaglia is listed as number 61 among US and Canadian forwards and goalies. (Goalies and European players are listed separately.) If he is actually drafted that highly, I think that this would make him the highest choice since Joe Juneau. By the way, he is 6' 0" tall and weighs 185. This was missing in the Troy Record article. Also RPI goalie recruit Brian Masotta is listed as number 12 among non-European goalies. He is listed as 6' 2" and 195 lb, slightly different than in the Troy Record article that Jayson quoted from. Not having a good memory, I can't list all of the rest of the recruits of other schools that appear on this list. However, there are relatively few current college players listed. These are the following: 38. Tony Tuzzolino Mich St. 81. Mark (Rocky) Welsing Wisc. 93. John Tuohy Kent (or wherever he has tranferred to) 110. Jeff Mikesch Mich Tech 152. Ashlin Halfnight Harvard 189. Jason Dekker Maine 229. Eric Perrin UVM 254. Chris Patrik Kent (see John Tuohy) 259. Blair Manning UMass Tim Thomas of UVM is listed 19 among goalies. I apologize for anyone I might have omitted or misspelled. Ralph Baer '68, '70, '74
