Plenty of BG hockey news to report on this week. Head coach Jerry York said Monday that he is not a candidate for the Denver job. York confirmed that he met with DU AD Jack McDonald, but it was to help him evaluate candidates for the position. York and McDonald are both BC grads and are friends. George Gwozdecky of Miami still appears to be the leading candidate for the DU position. According to the CCHA, sophomore defenseman Quinn Fair of the now-defunct Kent hockey team will be transferring to BG. Fair, from Campbell River, BC, will be immediately eligible to play next season. Fair was Kent's 8th leading scorer with 11 goals and 13 assists. Nine of his 11 goals came on the power play. He is listed at 6-2 and 200 pounds. Claud Morin and Dean Sylvester, two high-scoring juniors for Kent this past season, still have not announced where they will play next year. Morin was the 5th leading scorer in the CCHA this season and Sylvester was 16th. Awards given out at the BGSU Hockey Banquet Saturday evening: Jim Sears "Most Valuable Player" Award: Jeff Wells Howard Brown "Coaches" Award: Jeff Wells and Sean Pronger Sam Cooper "Top Scorer" Award: Jeff Wells and Brian Holzinger Jack Gregory "Scholar-Athlete" Award: Brian Holzinger Terry Flanagan Memorial "Most Courageous Player" Award: A.J. Plaskey Dr. Thomas Wojciechowski Recognition "Distinguished Service to the Program" Award: Jack Gregory Bill and Helen Lloyd "Most Improved Player" Award: Kevin Lune Jim Ruehl "Most Honorable Opponent" Award: David Oliver (Michigan) Notes: The most valuable, most improved and most honorable opponent awards were voted on by the players. David Oliver was there to accept his award in person. His selection was nearly unanimous, with only the 3 BG goalies voting for someone else (other goalies, I heard). The tear-jerker speech was given by A.J., who was a fan favorite but only played in about 10 games over the 5-year span of his career. Brian Holzinger was named the captain for next year. Jason Clark and Curtis Fry were named assistant captains.
