BANGOR, Maine (AP) -- A judge delayed a ruling Tuesday on Maine's request for an order that would allow its defending national champion hockey team to play in this weekend's Hockey East tournament. On Monday, Maine officials asked Penobscot County Superior Court Justice Robert L. Browne for a temporary restraining order and an injunction against Hockey East requiring that the Black Bears be included in the post-season competition. Lawyers for Hockey East filed a response to Maine's request late Tuesday. Browne, who had planned to rule on the case Tuesday, said he would review the league's filings and issue his decision Wednesday. "The Hockey East Association has acted completely within its charter in this matter and we believe that we have the right and responsibility to address the problems that have emerged in the University of Maine athletic department," said Hockey East Commissioner Robert M. DeGregorio Jr. The vote to bar Maine came last week after a team member, Patrice Tardif, was found to have been academically ineligible for much of the 1993-1994 season. Tardif was one of five graduate student-athletes who were misinformed about the number of credits they needed in order to play. That led to the suspension of the school's athletic director and compliance officer. The NCAA ruled last week that Maine would have to forfeit the games in which Tardif played while he carried less than eight credits. But it reinstated Tardif for the remainder of the season. Maine officials said the league's decision to bar the hockey team from the tournament was "arbitrary and capricious." "We feel strongly that students should not be punished for events over which they had no control," said university President Frederick E. Hutchinson in a statement. "The NCAA says the team is eligible to compete, and we believe Hockey East should acknowledge that and treat the university's students the same way it treats students from other universities." Maine spokesman John Diamond said the team is continuing to practice and is prepared to take the ice Thursday against Boston University. |--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--| | Lynn Burke Newport News, Va. | | [log in to unmask] -- mail still shows [log in to unmask] | |--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|
