Clarkson defeated Brown tonight, 4-2, to clinch 2nd place in the ECAC. Clarkson got on the board first. On a 2-on-1, Kevin Murphy was taken to the glass by the Brown defensemen but he was able to poke the puck to a streaking Craig Conroy who lifted over the shoulder of Brown goalie Geoff Finch. Later in the first, Josh Bartell took a blast frmo the point which Finch initially made a save on. On the resulting scramble in front, Todd White apparently poked the puck past Finch for a 2-0 Clarkson lead. Before the first ended, though, Brown made it 2-1. Chris Kaban was allowed to break in down right wing and put a rocket between the legs of Clarkson goalie Jason Currie. Brown outshot Clarkson, I believe, 8-3 in the first. Into the second, Brown tied it up on a controversial goal. On a power play, a Brown player shot the puck which apparently went in and bounced out quickly. The red light came on and the ref standing behind the net waved it off but, upon consultation with the other officials, the goal was awarded to Brown. From my perspective, it definitely looked like the puck went into the net and the right call was made. Deep into the third period, freshman Phil LeCavalier scored his first collegiate goal (a certainly the most important goal of his college career) off a point shot. Brown pressed Currie in the last 5 minutes. With under a minute left, Clarkson running around and Finch on the bench, a Brown player got the puck in the slot and launched a rocket which Currie made an excellent save on. The resulting scramble saw some 6-7 men right in front of Currie hacking at the puck and there was at least one clean wrist shot that Currie stopped; also in that fray, a Brown pass went right through the crease and was about to bit tipped in by a Bear forward but he had his stick lifted up by the CU defenseman at the last second. Shortly thereafter, a Brown shot was blocked by Steve Palmer who broke out and put a wrist shot into the empty net for the final margin of victory. Clarkson finishes in 2nd place in the ECAC and will PROBABLY play either Princeton, Union, Cornell or St. Lawrence depending on the outcomes of tonight's games and Tuesday's preliminary round action. I'd also like to wish a hearty NYAH to Brown forward Rob Merrill, if he's reading this. I'll be looking forward to seeing you this summer. :) *************************************************************************** Bri Farenell Clarkson '95 [log in to unmask] Glens Falls High '91 AHL and NCAA contact for rec.sport.hockey Go Erin Whitten (GFH '89)!
