The ECAC's end of the season awards were handed out last night in Lake Placid. The ECAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR was Harvard forward Steve Martins. Martins won the ECAC scoring title with 17-24=41 in 21 games. Martins is the third Harvard player in the last 4 years to win this award (Peter Ciavaglia and Ted Drury were the others). The ECAC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR was Vermont forward Eric Perrin. Perrin led the nation in goals for a freshman, with 22. The ECAC's BEST DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN went to Brown blueliner Mike Traggio. The ECAC's BEST DEFENSIVE FORWARD was Princeton's Ian Sharp. The ECAC COACH OF THE YEAR was, surprise, Union head man Bruce Delventhal. Delventhal's team was picked to finish 12th but his Dutchmen finished 14-9-3 overall and 10-9-3 in the league good for sixth place. Interesting how Conroy beat out Player of the Year Martins for the Hobey voting and how league Honorable mention Little was a Hobey finalist while goalie of the year Finch and second-teamer Currie (and fellow H.M.'er Israel) were not. Interesting how different groups of voters see things vastly differently.
