Well, I'm sure all of those non-Michigan fans out there are really enjoying this one. Here's the story Red told the players (this is third hand, a friend who tutors the players said that this is what the players told her...) He was doing his radio show and stayed at the bar after it was through. At about 12:20 am, he decided it was time to leave and went out to his car...when he got there he sat in the passenger seat apparently waiting for someone. He got impatient and had to urinate, so he got out, walked over to the Loving Branch of the Ann Arbor Library and urinated. Then he got back in the car and moved it 20 or so feet to a spot closer to the door of the bar. Unfortunately, an Ann Arbor Police officer, with a video camera mounted in his car, saw someone stumble out of the bar, and proceeded to videotape Coach Red do all of the above. He failed a number of tests and had a blood-alcohol-level of .12. He was arrested for drunk driving and urinating-in-public. Maximum penalties are 90 days in jail & $500 for the drunk driving, 90 days or $300 for the u-i-p. Red is due in court March 22. As for Michigan Athletics, Red met with the Michigan AD Wednesday and, according to the AD, all punishments were decided and the matter was closed. Whatever punishments there were are not being made public. Red apologized to the players for his behavior. In the Michigan Daily, some of the players said that they were more determined than ever to win to get Red's mind off of this terrible embarrassment. The Bottom Line: Red is due in court next Tuesday and will likely get a fine, some community service, and probation. Do not expect any jail time. As for Michigan Athletic suspensions, the answer is no. Whatever punishment the Michigan AD has given Red, the public will never know. IMHO, I am happy about how the Michigan AD handled the situation. It is not a matter for Michigan Athletics, it is a matter for the courts and Red. If you disagree, then think about how you would feel if you got suspended from your job because you got caught driving drunk. You would scream "Foul," wouldn't you? Unless, of course, your job is driving vehicles around... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ____ ____ Roger L.
