Well put!  Hockey is NOT the same as other sports, however.
Resurfacing the ice has already been mentioned as a problem.  I
guess I like the current situation - give 'em 5 min. to try to
resolve it, then let it be a tie.  There is no disgrace to a tie,
and as someone else pointed out, some games *deserve* to end in a
tie.  Consider the recent Maine-BU 0-0 tie - would you *really*
want that decided by a shootout?  Is it not a more satisfying
ending to be a tie?
