For the 4th consecutive weekend, the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs
bounced back from a disappointing loss in the opening game of a series to
win the second. This win was over arch-rival Minnesota. The Bulldogs
came out on Sunday a totally different team from Saturdays game which
goalie Taras Lendzyk stood on his head to keep the 'Dogs in the game,
only to lose in overtime. The Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead entering the
third period, but also had a 5:00 penalty kill to start the third
period.(After another very questionable game disqualification penalty to
Brad Federenko for checking from behind). Dave Larson of Minnesota took
a penalty 52 seconds into the period, which offset 2 minutes of the 5 min
penalty. As the Gophers were peppering Lendzyk, Rusty Fitzgerald took
the puck and skated 1 on 1 and beat goalie Jeff Moen with a 30 footer
just as the penalty expired. Brett Larsons goal at 9:30 of the third
period gave UMD a 3 goal cushion, and sent many of the 9256 Gopher fans
heading for the exits. Chris Sittlow's short handed goal with 5 minutes
remaining was the icing on the cake as the Bulldogs stopped Minnesota's 9
game winning streak. The win also gave UMD the honor of handing the
Gophers their first WCHA regular season loss in their new arena. The
Gophers were previously 10-0-2 in league play at home.
Minnesota-Duluth's record in Minneapolis since 1985 is now a respectable
6-5-1. This win certainly gives UMD fans something positive in an
otherwise down season to this point.
