The Spartans, to put it bluntly, SUCKED tonight. They came out extremely flat and Ohio St., who has been termed one of the better 40 minute teams in hockey, beat them. Plain and simple. No excuses (like have been bandied about quite recently by another school we won't men- tion). You could sort of tell it was going to be a bad night when the Slapshots (the self-anointed cheering section for MSU, which usually doesn't stand even if you light fires under their asses) were standing for the majority of the game. MSU basically played a very similar game to the one they played here against Western Michigan in December (except we scored this time). It appeared that the Spartans had come back and taken command of the game in the middle of the second period, only to have the Buckeyes score two quick goals with 3:00 left in the second to take a 5-3 lead at the intermission. When MSU failed to score until the 16:00 mark of the third, the result was fairly academic. Askey played an excellent game for OSU, making the big stops when he needed to. Considering that he is only a sophomore, there is some potential in Columbus to build a succesful program around him. This will probably go down as one of, if not the, biggest upset of the year. The Spartans had come into this game winning six of their last seven. Now, they only have 18 hours to regroup before the UIC Flames come to town (who, at last report, were leading BG 6-5). To give you an idea of the size of this upset, this was OSU's first win EVER in East Lansing (they are now 1-21). Oh, and before I forget...... 3 stars- 1. White, OSU 2. Askey, OSU 3. Carter, MSU G. M. Finniss Michigan State University WVU '87, UTenn '92, MSU who the hell knows when? (if we play many more like we did tonight, it'll be sooner than later)
