I'm changing the formula for calculating RPICH as of this week. The formula, which attempts to be the same as that used in calculating the Rating Percentage Index for baseball, basketball, and hockey, has been (winning percentage * 20%) + (opponents' winning percentage * 40%) + (opponents' opponents' winning percentage * 40%). According to an article that appeared in The_Post-Standard of Syracuse, NY, on February 23, the Rating Percentage Index now weights those three factors by 25%, 50%, and 25% respectively. RPICH now also includes Div1 games played by Mass Amherst, in recognition of its status as an affiliate member of Hockey East. Here's the new, improved RPICH for this week, followed by a report using the old formula for comparison. The 20-40-40 formula will not appear after this week. Any questions should be addressed directly to me. If there is sufficient interest, I will summarize and report back to the list. Thanks to Bill Fenwick for finding the relevant article in The_Post-Standard. -- Erik Rating Percentage Index for College Hockey, compiled by Erik Biever This report includes the 663 games through 02/27/94 between teams eligible for the Division 1 tournament plus Mass Amherst. To remain consistent with NCAA statistical bylaws, Maine's forfeited wins over Providence are counted as victories for Maine. Ratings are derived by summing each team's winning percentage, the average winning percentage of its opponents, and the average winning percentage of its opponents' opponents, multiplied by 25%, 50%, and 25% respectively. Factors such as home ice and margin of victory are not included. No individual game is weighted more heavily than any other. RPICH IS PRODUCED INDEPENDENTLY OF THE NCAA. // Now, here's RPICH calculated with the old 20-40-40 formula // Opp OppOpp *OLD G W L T Win% Win% Win% RPICH 1 Boston University 31 23- 7- 1 .7581 .5710 .5171 .5869* 2 Michigan 34 28- 5- 1 .8382 .5085 .4959 .5694* 3 New Hampshire 32 19-11- 2 .6250 .5289 .5167 .5432* 4 Maine 32 16-12- 4 .5625 .5553 .5177 .5417* 5 Minnesota 34 19-11- 4 .6176 .5273 .5164 .5410* 6 Harvard 25 18- 4- 3 .7800 .4739 .4865 .5402* 7 Mass Lowell 33 18- 8- 7 .6515 .5085 .5112 .5382* 8 Wisconsin 34 20-13- 1 .6029 .5276 .5148 .5375* 9 Northeastern 33 17-11- 5 .5909 .5205 .5276 .5374* 10 Colorado College 34 21- 9- 4 .6765 .4905 .5146 .5373* 11 Lake Superior 35 22- 9- 4 .6857 .4888 .5043 .5344* 12 Northern Michigan 34 19-14- 1 .5735 .5281 .5136 .5314* 13 Western Michigan 32 19-10- 3 .6406 .4991 .4964 .5264* 14 Michigan State 32 17-10- 5 .6094 .5086 .5019 .5261* 15 Miami 30 16-13- 1 .5500 .5239 .4979 .5188* 16 Boston College 32 15-13- 4 .5313 .5152 .5153 .5184* 17 St Cloud 32 17-11- 4 .5938 .4794 .5158 .5168* 18 Alaska-Anchorage 32 15-15- 2 .5000 .5223 .5089 .5125* 19 RPI 27 15- 8- 4 .6296 .4724 .4844 .5086* 20 Brown 25 13- 8- 4 .6000 .4771 .4813 .5034* 21 Clarkson 26 14- 8- 4 .6154 .4674 .4827 .5031* 22 Bowling Green 31 16-13- 2 .5484 .4903 .4927 .5029* 23 Minnesota-Duluth 34 13-18- 3 .4265 .5339 .5082 .5021* 24 Merrimack 28 9-17- 2 .3571 .5431 .5221 .4975* 25 Denver 34 15-17- 2 .4706 .4949 .5112 .4966* 26 Vermont 27 11-10- 6 .5185 .4871 .4844 .4923* 27 Providence 31 11-17- 3 .4032 .5127 .5103 .4898* 28 North Dakota 34 10-20- 4 .3529 .5382 .5069 .4886* 29 Alaska-Fairbanks 27 16-11- 0 .5926 .4032 .4942 .4775* 30 Michigan Tech 37 9-23- 5 .3108 .5222 .5077 .4741* 31 Colgate 26 12-12- 2 .5000 .4530 .4822 .4741* 32 Ferris State 34 12-21- 1 .3676 .4944 .4990 .4709* 33 Union 22 9- 9- 4 .5000 .4523 .4741 .4706* 34 Notre Dame 33 8-20- 5 .3182 .5077 .4973 .4656* 35 Cornell 25 7-13- 5 .3800 .4881 .4846 .4651* 36 Illinois-Chicago 34 9-23- 2 .2941 .5130 .4953 .4621* 37 Princeton 23 7-13- 3 .3696 .4752 .4749 .4540* 38 Ohio State 28 5-18- 5 .2679 .4948 .4986 .4510* 39 Kent 34 10-22- 2 .3235 .4686 .4932 .4494* 40 St Lawrence 27 8-19- 0 .2963 .4560 .4844 .4354* 41 Dartmouth 25 5-19- 1 .2200 .4913 .4797 .4324* 42 Air Force 20 5-15- 0 .2500 .4603 .4733 .4234* 43 Yale 25 4-20- 1 .1800 .4691 .4750 .4136* 44 Army 14 1-13- 0 .0714 .4421 .4736 .3806*
