With the possibility that Maine may have to forfeit more games, I put together a comparison of the HE standings as they currently are and how they would look today with forfeits counted. Remember that it has not been decided how, if at all, this will affect the HE standings and playoffs. This was based on the reports I have read that Tardif played in all of Maine's games and was ineligible the entire season. Obviously, if this was not true, the following changes. HOCKEY EAST STANDINGS - CURRENT 2/25/94 Hockey East Overall GP W-L-T Pts GF-GA || GP W-L-T GF-GA =============================================== 1 Boston University 19 14-4-1 29 93-55 || 29 21-7-1 139-82 2 Mass Lowell 21 11-4-6 28 81-65 || 31 18-6-7 138-98 3 Northeastern 21 9-7-5 23 88-82 || 31 17-9-5 139-127 4 Providence 20 9-9-2 20 68-91 || 30 14-13-3 110-123 5 New Hampshire 20 8-10-2 18 75-80 || 30 17-11-2 125-105 6 Maine 20 6-10-4 16 73-67 || 30 11-15-4 115-105 7 Merrimack 21 6-13-2 14 68-91 || 32 14-16-2 116-123 Boston College 20 5-11-4 14 71-86 || 30 13-13-4 125-113 Maine forfeited three Hockey East wins to Providence because of Maine's use of an ineligible player. MAINE NON-LOSSES VS HOCKEY EAST TEAMS vs BC: 0-0-1 1 pt vs BU: 1-0-1 3 pts vs UML: 0-0-2 2 pts vs MC: 2-0-0 4 pts vs NH: 2-0-0 4 pts vs NU: 1-0-0 2 pts (If I get any mail from people telling me "Maine's record vs BC wasn't 0-0-1, it was 0-1-1", I am going to trash it. This is NOT Maine's overall record vs HE teams, it is their record in games they did not lose to HE teams. Losses will still be counted as losses, but wins and ties will be changed to losses.) HOCKEY EAST STANDINGS - WITH ALL 1993-94 MAINE GAMES FORFEITED 2/25/94 Hockey East Overall GP W-L-T Pts GF-GA || GP W-L-T GF-GA =============================================== 1 Boston University 19 16-3-0 32 93-55 || 29 23-6-0 139-82 2 Mass Lowell 21 13-4-4 30 81-65 || 31 20-6-5 138-98 3 Northeastern 21 10-6-5 25 88-82 || 31 18-8-5 139-127 4 New Hampshire 20 10-8-2 22 75-80 || 30 19-9-2 125-105 5 Providence 20 9-9-2 20 68-91 || 30 14-13-3 110-123 6 Merrimack 21 8-11-2 18 68-91 || 32 16-14-2 116-123 7 Boston College 20 6-11-3 15 71-86 || 30 14-13-3 125-113 8 Maine 20 0-20-0 0 73-67 || 30 0-30-0 115-105 This seems to help teams like UNH, Merrimack and BC, while hurting PC and of course Maine. BU picks up a point on Lowell, but BU had two games in hand anyway. Merrimack and BC would get to avoid BU in the first round (against whom Merrimack went 0-4-0 and BC 0-3-0). UNH would get to host PC instead of going there - quite a significant change. Again, THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RE-ORDERING OF THE STANDINGS! It is only meant to show you what would happen if Maine had to forfeit the games that we are talking about. No decision has been made yet. It will be interesting to see if PC, which backed into a possible home ice slot with its six forfeit points, ends up on the road after all should the other teams receive forfeit wins too. I would not be surprised if this situation causes the rest of HE to push for a speedy resolution to the matter. I suspect BU, BC, UML, MC, UNH, and NU would not be happy if their add'l points did not come until after the season was over while PC did get its points and a home ice slot anyway. --- --- Mike Machnik [log in to unmask] Cabletron Systems, Inc. *HMM* 11/13/93 <<<<< Color Voice of the (14-16-2) Merrimack Warriors WCCM 800 AM >>>>>
